1626-1628 Drainage of the Hatfield Chase level began in 1626. In 1628 eighty families from Walloon Flanders fled to England and settled at Hatfield Chase.

1630s on Meanwhile in the 1630s Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford, spent a reputed £100,000 draining the Bedford Level around Thorney, bringing the whole estate and parish into agricultural use.

In 1654 Cromwell issued an ordinance that any Protestant foreigner buying or farming lands in the reclaimed Bedford levels would be accounted free denizens of the Commonwealth. Because of this and the riots, many people moved from Sandtoft to Thorney. [Quarto vol 17, introduction p. viii]
