Sir William Petre purchased the manor of Ingatestone from Henry VIII after the suppression of the monasteries and built Ingatestone Hall which is still owned and occupied by the family. By the 1850s William Bernard, 12th Baron Petre, had his country seat at Thorndon Hall in West Horndon, a house built in neoclassical style in 1764-78 which was badly damaged by a fire in 1878. The Petre family were kind and liberal neighbours who were popular locally
