The Hansom cab was patented in 1834
by Joseph Hansom. They were fast and light two-wheeled cabs pulled by a
single horse and so cheaper and more agile in London's notorious traffic
jams. They soon replaced the more cumbersome four-wheeled, two-horse Hackney
carriage. Hansom cabs seated two passengers inside and the driver who sat
in a spring seat behind the vehicle in the open air. There was a trapdoor
through which the passengers could communicate with and pay the driver,
who had a lever to unlock the doors. |
