A visit to Kenya and a stopover in Ethiopia January 1979 Kenya - Nairobi We visited friends in Nairobi, went to the Equator, Lake Nakuru, and Treetops, and got the train to Mombassa on the coast. Pelicans and pink Flamingos on Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, 150km from Nairobi. We stayed at Treetops Lodge at Nyeri near Mount Kenya. Open since 1932 and visited by royalty, the Treetops hotel closed in 2021. Water buffalo and wart hogs at the waterhole from the observation platform at Treetops. The Thika falls on the Chania river in the Aberdare National Park, 45km from Nairobi. Kenya - Mombassa and Malindi Mombasa railway station, the terminus of the 'Uganda railway'. The overnight train from Nairobi had comfortable sleeping cars and a restaurant with waiters in uniform and full silver service. Aluminium elephant tusk archways on Kilindini Road, now Moi Avenue, Mombasa. We stopped for a fruit juice in Kwa Shibu Road. We stayed by the seaside in the Silversands hotel at Malindi, 115 km north of Mombasa. Nearby was the Vasco de Gama pillar. There were pineapples in the market at Malindi. Ethiopia, Addis Ababa We flew to Kenya on Ethiopian Airlines so we had a short stopover at Addis Ababa on the way back. We stayed at the Harambee hotel with a view over the city.
