Visits to the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and the other Channel Islands

in April 1969 and August 1970

The Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are technically self-governing and not part of the United Kingdom, and they have separate country codes in the ISO list of countries. However, their international representation is largely the responsibility of the UK government and they do not have seats at the United Nations.

The Isle of Man

In April 1969 we got the ferry from Liverpool to Douglas in the Isle of Man, and travelled by bus around the island visiting Ramsey, Point of Ayre, Peel and Castletown. This is more or less our first ever holiday photograph, a rather faded picture of Ramsey harbour.

Jersey

In August 1970 we flew to Jersey from Exeter airport. After looking round the island we went to the harbour and got the hydrofoil to Guernsey.

Guernsey

We stayed at the Kennedy hotel and hired a Mini to explore the island. We looked around Saint Peter Port ....

We visited the decorative Little Chapel, built in 1914 in Les Vauxbelets valley ....

- Lihou

We visited Lihou island on a misty day and saw the ruins of St Mary's Abbey.

- Alderney

We also went by boat to Alderney, which seemed rather grey and dour unlike the other colourful Channel Islands. This is the harbour.
